From Jamia Millia Islamia- A Keralite role model
(K. K. Subair)
In the field of engineering, Jamia Millia has taken a lead in introducing innovative methods of teaching and research. Prof Mini S. Thomas, a Keralite has been spearheading these innovations. Hailing from Kothamangalam, Mini has been endeavouring to achieve the highest level of excellence in the field of Electrical Engineering by incorporating the latest advancements in this field from all over the world. It was through her efforts, for the first time in India, a SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) laboratory was established in Jamia. With the SCADA systems, one can observe and control, from one’s own computer console, the working of Electrical Power Systems and other processes at distant locations. She also took the initiative in introducing five years ago, for the first time in India, an M. Tech program in Electrical Power System Management. She is one of the few Indians holding senior positions in IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) the largest professional body of Electrical, Electronic and Computer engineers in the world. She is the student coordinator of IEEE
Asia Pacific region. Mini is responsible for guiding the IEEE programs to improve the professional and personal development of the engineering students of Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
IEEE supervises the research in Electrical, Electronics and Computer engineering fields. She keeps in touch with professionals from Siemens, General Electric and other companies, and researchers from different parts of the world in the field of Electrical Engineering, and makes use of the innovations and information obtained in the field of teaching and research.
She has established her stamp of ability, both in academics and professional carrier, and has become a leading engineering professional. She often participates in workshops and meetings in different parts of the world. Although she had job offers from big industrial houses, and Indian Engineering Services, she declined these and opted to teach, as she was fond of teaching. She had received the Career Award for Young Teachers from AICTE.
Mini obtained her B. Tech from Kerala University, M. Tech from IIT Madras, both with gold medals. She took her PHD from IIT Delhi. She was a lecturer in REC Calicut, and then in Delhi College of Engineering, before joining Jamia. She arranges distinguished lecture programs of illustrious professors and technical professionals from different parts of the world in Jamia.
Mini is also active in the Power & Energy society of IEEE. IEEE has around four lakh engineering professionals as its members from across the world.
