The IEEE Jamia Millia Islamia Student Branch organized the 9th edition of its annual technical cum cultural fest ENCOMIUM-09 “An Intellectual Odyssey” on 3rd and 4th of October, 2009. The event captured the imagination of youth across the NCR with over 15 inter college events organized where in students could compete with probably the best in the region. The two day extravaganza gave ample opportunities to budding engineers as well as management aspirants to showcase their talent in events like the Technical Paper Presentation, Business Plan competition and many more. All this interspersed with scores of informal events like who dare wins, futsal, street play, junkyard wars etc.
The festival started by an inaugural ceremony which was chaired by Prof. Syed Sikander Nabi, Dean, Faculty of Engg. & Tech., JMI and inaugurated by Mr. Gursharan S Bhatia, CEO T&D, India who was kind enough to grace the occasion as the chief guest. The chief guest and the Dean released the 2009 edition of IEEE JMI’s annual tech-magazine, ENCORE.
The inaugural was followed by an informative lecture on ‘SMART GRIDS’ by Ms. Anamika Bhargava who is currently working with GE Energy as Regional Commercial & Marketing Director- T&D for India Subcontinent, GE ENERGY T&D. The delegates from IEEE (Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers), Delhi section also attended the event.
The participants in the green tech innovation came up with implementable, ideal projects on how to use green technology in the upliftment of the village settings. In the event called as RATIONALE which is a technical paper presentation, students from all over the country showed an exceptionally enthusiastic participation in demonstrating their competent talents brought out in the form of paper presentations. All the participants presented a paper based on a pre-specified topic related to electrical, electronics and communication and computer subjects of their choice and the most superlative presentation adjudged by a panel of judges was awarded.
The business plan competition, better known as ENMETIER, engendered the entrepreneurial skills and the strategical tactics of the participating students. ENIGMA, which is better understandable as the general quiz, really helped in proliferating the knowledge of the participants as well as the audience. Various new robotic models were seen in the event called ENCEPHELIA which were made by the students from different colleges to compete against each other for the task oriented events like robowars and line follower.
A huge participation was witnessed in the debating competition better known as ENCOPINION. It gave a platform to the students to sublimate their thoughts in the most explicit manner on the topics given on the spot, ranging from argumentative to current affairs and was organized in the new Parliamentary debate format, which enthralled the participants and judges alike. The programming skills of the students were well challenged in the event called AVANZARE, which included C/C++ and JAVA Programming. The one event which could collectively test all the important skills in a person like speed intelligence and comprehension was the TREASURE HUNT which was very successfully conducted.
In the AD MAD SHOW, eight of the many teams were short listed for the final round based on prelims. The teams performed self prepared advertisements on the topics given on the spot by the event heads and all the advertisements were very much appreciated by the. Students’ calibre of amalgating their acumen and imagination to transform waste materials into new useful products was very well projected in the event called as JUNK YARD. It could well scrutinise the participants’ creativity and management skills.
All the whiz kids around got the chance to compete against each other in the event called MIND BOGGLER on the basis of their presence of mind, knowledge and wits and prove to all who was the best. One of the most awaited event ENCOLYMPICS witnessed the hardcore gamers battling out against each other for the ultimate superiority on the gaming machine. It was a multistage event which assessed the participants on various genres of gaming but in the end only the fastest, the quickest and the fittest survived and won over the battle.
The most important aim of the event called SREET PLAY was very much fulfilled as all the plays acted by the participants were successful in bringing out the current social and political problems plaguing in our country in the most light hearted manner but firmly at the same time. One of the events named as CRYPTOMANIA provided an opportunity to the India's best minds to showcase their deducing skills and win in a battle of wits. It also gave a pleasant nudge to the participant's brain cells and entertained the audience at the same time. BULLS AND BEARS rendered all the future investors and aspiring investment bankers to have an opportunity to appraise themselves out in the gruelling game of share trading and stock analysis. One of the most successful events of the festival 'FUTSAL' witnessed the participation of over 130 footballers who played in teams of 5.It surely acted as a break to the regular curriculum. The final event saw a light hearted battle between all students in various fun tasks in WHO DARES WINS, which was compiled and executed perfectly.
The event concluded with the closing ceremony including the prize distribution. All the winners were applauded for their hard work and skills through certificates, gifts and cash prizes. The two day festival ended on a high note with the crowd tuning in to the rock band performing on stage. Months of hard work by the organizers paid off in the truest sense and the event was a big success.
“The event has been a huge success and we hope that ENCOMIUM will emerge bigger and better each year” said Prof. Mini S. Thomas, Branch Counselor, IEEE JMI in her vote of thanks appreciating the students for participating and reinstated that the main aim of organizing such festivals was to provide students a firsthand experience of handling and managing an event and instilling interactive and managerial skills in them, which is as important in today’s competitive world as sound technical education.
