29th and 30th January 2011.
These dates symbolize the power of IEEE Jamia Millia Islamia, when we pulled off the greatest and most successful version of Encomium, the technical and cultural festival of IEEE JMI, till date. The festival witnessed a huge participation by students coming from all around the NCR region and even from Southern India.
The festival was inaugurated by Mr. Tarun Malik, Director of Product Marketing and Strategy, Microsoft India and was presided over by Prof. S.M. Rashid, Pro-VC of Jamia Millia Islamia. Also present as chief guests were Prof. Mehtab Alam, Head, Civil Engineering Dept., F/O Engineering. And Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia and Mr. Shahid Akhlaque, CEO of Oglacs Software Pvt. Ltd.
The fest was a perfect amalgamation of best of both worlds, technical as well as non-technical, and had a total of 17 exciting events, some of which were Technical Paper Presentation, Green Tech Innovation, Business Plan Competition, Robotics Competition, Futsal, Nukkad Natak, Battle of Bands, etc.
The event GREEN TECH INNOVATION consisted of a technical paper presentation and t-shirt painting competition. In the former, students presented innovative technical ideas with which we can live sustainably with our environment. The latter saw participants painting on t-shirts to spread a ‘green’ message. In the event RATIONALE (Technical Paper Presentation related to electrical, electronics, communications and computers field), students from all-over the country showed enthusiastic participation and showcased their technical prowess. The technical paper presentation was based upon a pre-mentioned topic. ENMETIER (Business Plan Competition) tested entrepreneurial and managerial dexterity of the participants.
ENIGMA (General Quiz) was a popular event where the participants’ general knowledge was tested to its limits. One of the most successful events was ENCEPHELIA (Robotics Competition). It saw over 40 entries and had 2 events, Robo Roadies, in which participants had to successfully maneuver their robots over a grueling track, and Line Follower. In AVANZARE, the programming and coding skills of the students, on C++ and Java language, were put to test. ENCOPINION (Debate Competition) witnessed a sophisticated verbal battle between participants over various current issues of national interest.
Cultural events provided some relief from the tedious schedule. In the ADMAD event, the participants donned the ad guru cap and made and performed their own advertisements on some specific commodity. FUTSAL probably witnessed the largest number of participating teams, of all events. More than 40 teams registered for this event. Teams of 5 were made and over 200 footballers competed with the rival teams for glory and the top prize. In ENCOLYMPICS (LAN Gaming Competition), while some competitors fragged each other, others raced against each other. The games being played were the ever-addictive Counter Strike and the high-octane Need For Speed. WHO DARES WINS and ROADIES events really tested the endurance of the participants with off the hook challenges. TREASURE HUNT tested the logical and allegorical skills of the participants who were searching the clues to lead them to the ‘treasure’. NUKKAD NATAK (Street Play Competition) saw some of the finest street play teams from many colleges of Delhi performing and trying their best to create awareness about various social and economic problems plaguing our country. SHUTTERBUG provided a perfect platform for budding photographers to prove their talent.
All these events were concluded with the closing ceremony and prize distribution, in which the efforts of the winners were acknowledged by giving them certificates of merit and cash prizes.
Finally, the fest couldn’t have culminated in a better way than the event SIXTH STRING, in which 9 of the best bands of Delhi battled to reign supreme. The audience were bombarded by the sheer power of rock and metal music, and headbanging and mosh pits were seen everywhere in the amphitheatre. The effort of the organizers was truly visible in the success of the festival and we hope to better that next year. |
